Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup will not participate in the European Championships in Madrid next week.

Denmark’s strongest men’s doubles pair, Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup, will miss the badminton European Championships in Madrid next week.

30-year-old Kim Astrup is plagued by a groin injury, and the duo has therefore not been selected, Badminton Denmark announces in a press release.

– It is very unfortunate for Kim and Anders, who are one of the candidates for the European title, and we understand that they are disappointed, says Jens Meibom, elite director at Badminton Denmark, in the press release.

Meibom justifies the decision by stating that Astrup needs to be fully ready for the Thomas Cup in two weeks.

– Kim is a key player on the Thomas Cup team, and we believe we have a chance to win the Cup this year, but that obviously requires that all players are completely fit, says the elite director.

Looking forward to the World Team Championships

Astrup is disappointed, but he also acknowledges that he is not at his best at the moment.

– It’s frustrating, but now I will use the next couple of weeks to completely recover from my injury so that I am fully ready to play in the Thomas Cup, says Astrup.

Astrup and Skaarup have together won four medals at the individual European Championships. Gold in 2018, silver in 2016, and bronze in 2017 and 2021.

Lasse Mølhede and Jeppe Bay are Denmark’s only representatives in men’s doubles at the European Championships in the absence of Astrup and Skaarup.

Men’s singles player Rasmus Gemke also misses the European Championships as he is not fully recovered from an injury.

Conclusion

“It is unfortunate that Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup will not be able to participate in the European Championships due to injuries. They were strong contenders for the title, but their focus is now on recovering and being fully fit for the upcoming Thomas Cup. We wish them a speedy recovery and hope to see them back in action soon,” said the website’s author.
